Herbal medicine is the oldest and most widely used form of medicine on our planet. The World Health Organization states that 80% of the world’s 8-billion people rely on plant-based medicines for their health care. Herbs in general are simpler and cheaper than prescription drugs and have fewer side effects. This booklet is my personal collection of herbal remedies that brings together Western first Aid techniques and Western Herbal Medicine to create a holistic approach to treating medical emergencies and minor illnesses.
These remedies are based on the Western Herbal Medicine Tradition. In this regard, “tradition” does not mean superstition, but hundreds of years of developing soothing as well as life-saving remedies from the environment. I also offer remedies from my own decades of being a hospital nurse as well as a herbalist. My goal is to share the wisdom of these decades of using herbs and of learning what works and what doesn’t. Some are folk remedies, some from my many herbalist friends, and some from southwest herbalist, teacher and author, Michael S. Moore. Although there are many herbal remedies, this booklet focuses on what can easily be found in an American kitchen, herb store, natural grocers, natural pharmacy, your back yard, and what you can grow in your own garden.
I believe that we must know what to do when there is no doctor and what to do until medical help is available. It is also important to know when to seek medical assistance. There are times when Western medicine and treatments are necessary. Reading this booklet can help you with emergencies, and help you decide when to seek a medical professional.
